HOROWHENUA COUNCIL. A meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held in Levin ou?" 'Saturday, Cr. G. A. Monk presiding. - Also present' were Ore. C. I’. Jensen, A. M. Colquliouii, A J. Gimb.ett, D. K. Guy, A. M. Atkins, J. D. Aitclii-A son ajid L. H. Best. A A circular letter was received from the Public. Works Department in respect of monetary assistance fora the maintenance of main highways. ‘ The letter stated that this year it. was proposed by the department to restrict the authorisations for the first six months to “half of last year’s expenditure, less 20 per cent. ’ ’—Received. Mr O. Coley, of Shannon, wrote stating that owing to there not being a sufficient fall in the Buckley Road [drain his low-lying property was being j Hooded. Mr Coley stated he was pre- ! pared to offer th« assistance of two men to the council for deepening, the' ' drain.—On Cr. Colquhoun’s motion it [was decided to grant permission for | the work, subject to the work being done to the satisfaction of the engineer. Mr Coley also sought permission to. remove the fence on Height’s Road, from the Main Road to -Kilsby’s to follow the road round the hill.—-Refer-red to the engineer, who was . given: power to act. Messrs T. A. and 11. E. 'Thornton,. lof Waitarere Road, .advised that a drain had been blocked and the flow of the water was impeded.—The members for the Whirokino riding were instructed. to present a report on the matter. ’ ■ ■; > Mrs D. D. Doyle, secretary of the' Levin and district committee for the St. John-Red Cross Appeal, wrote seeking a grant from the council.— The chairman, said the cause was t very worthy one, and moved that £7 10s be granted. This was agreed to. Mr W. S. Long, of Shannon, asked if the council would have the Kara Road drain cleaned, and stated that lie was prepared to pay part of the cost and provide one man for the Svork. —The matter was referred to the engineer and the members for the Tokomaru riding. Mr J. S. Schwae6, of Tokomaru,. advised that there was a dangerous, corner in the vicinity of his gate.—Referred to Cr. Aitchison and the engineer, with power to act. . , . A”; The health inspector (Mr W. ‘J. Guinan) reported that all the new buildings erected in the county had been inspected. One case of pulmonary tuberculosis was reported. * ' i ', The engineer (Mr'. J.' T. M. Brewster), in the course of his report, stated that during the month five building .permits-of a total value of £3387 6s 8d were issued. ■ --V '•
