Y.M.C.A.
The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. was held on Wednesday evening at the Y.M.C.A. rooms, Grey Street. The chairman (Mr G. A. Eliott) presided, a.nd there were also present Messrs T. 11. Hodder, L. 1. Plimmer, J-. A. Grant, A. W. Yortt, W. H. Brown and B. R. Brown, and the general secretary. Apologies were received from Messrs R. C. Donald, G. Griggs, H. Cunninghame and A. Hopwood. The general secretary’s report stated that the winter season had opened with the membership strength of classes most satisfactory. The senior men’s clase was down slightly in membership owing to enlistments; this was to be expected under the conditions which prevailed at the present. The membership stood at 351 i.n the organised classes of the physical department. The secretary stated that over and above this niimber there were a total of 294 players in the inter-house basketball, which made a total of 645 members in the activities of the organised programme of the association. There were a total of 49 teams registered in the inter-house basketball competition, comprising 31 ladies’ teams and 18 men’s. A strong committee had been formed and a record season was anticipated. The Optimist Club had commenced activities early with a membership of 34. Mr J. A. Brown was elected president, and Mr Colin Penketh secretary. The affairs oi the club are being controlled by a nvtj committee, and the club should enjoy an excellent season. In the boys’ division the junior leaders’ corps and the Hi-Y Club committees controlling the activities of the Y.M.D. and secondary school boys’ class, respectively, were keenly interested in their particular group and doing good work. The Y.M.D., High School boys, and primary school boys’ groups were all organised into clubs and working on club programmes on a competitive basis. The religious studies were taken each week bv Mr Hamisli McKenzie in the secondary school boys’ group, and by Mr T. Wilkinson in the primary school group. The general secretary also reported that Mr N. Cook had resigned from the staff in March to enlist with the Navy and that Mr C. Ellingham, a member of the senior class, was acting as boys’ work director in a part-time capacity. The secretary reported on the excellent response to the Fighting Services Welfare Appeal and stated tTiat a total of £3326 2s Id had been raised in this effort.' It was reported that the Harrier Club commenced activities with 25 members. Mr J. Eagle was president, Mr J. Scott captain and Mr C. McVicar secretary. Under these officers the club was assured of an excellent season. Twenty-nine members from, the senior division were either serving overseas or had enlisted for services overseas. It was decided that the association give all the help in its power to the forthcoming appeal by the St. John Ambulance —Red Cross Society for the Sick and Wounded Fund.
