LONGBURN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.; LONGBURN May 8. The May meeting of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs W. Fletcher. Mrs Sayles was welcomed and enrolled as a member. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Holland in her recent bereavement. It was decided not to enter a court in the forthcoming A. and P. Show owing to the petrol restrictions. The thought for the month was given by Mrs T. Rowland: “Never miss an opportunity of giving pleasure to others; you will feel better and happier.” Mrs Rowland was the winner of the competi tion for a decorated bowl of flowers with Mrs Nicol second and Mrs Fletcher third; bottle of preserved fruit, Mrs Rowland 1, Mrs Nicol 2, Mrs Holland .3 ; bloom, Mrs Rowland 1, Mrs Nicol 2, Mrs Attick 3. An amusing competition was won by Mrs Murray. Miss 13. Zurcher was the hostess. Competitions for next month are; Jar of pickles, bloom, and knitted balaclava. The balaclavas are to bo passed on to the Patriotic Society in Palmerston North. The hostesses are to be Mesdames .Chamberlain and Nicol. t , Mr and Mrs •W. Birch are spending a holiday in Auckland. Miss McFarlane, of the school staff, is spending the vacation at her home in Ohau. A flag “500” evening conducted by the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday. Prizes were won by Mesdames J. Martin and Lover and Messrs .W. Bailey and B. Rankin. , .
