(From Our Own Correspondent.) OPlivl, May 8. One of the largest gatherings ever seen in the Opiki lia.ll, . representing almost every family in the district, assembled to farewell Mr and Mrs S. 11. Yeung and family. The hall was decorated with pampas grass and autumn leaves. A musical programme by the school children was in the capable hands of Mia Barrie, and a professional orchestra supplied the music lor the dancing. Mr J. Mabey was M.G. Songs were contributed by Misses J. Percy and N. Hansen, and a group of giris, Nancy and Ann Mabey, Ellen and Jocelyn Norman, Aileen 1 Claridge and Sytvin Smith; a piano duet by Ann Mabey and Aileen Claridge; a poem by little Audrey Y'oung; and a dialogue by Mary Horn and Barry Nagel. Air G. Allwright, who was Called upon to make the presentation, said he had known Mr and Mrs Young when they first came to the district over 20 years ago. They were pioneers in a young, newly developed district,, and' had watched it grow from, bush and flax to the thriving grasslands of to-day. Mr and Mrs Young and . family had always been held in the-highest esteem; they had taken part in and given support to all local activities and so would be greatly massed. Mr Allwright asked little Shirley Percy to present Mrs Young' with a bouquet from the ladies. Mrs Irwin, on bchalf_ of the Women’s Institute, presented Misses Ruth, Jean and Nora Young with posies. Mr Allwright also asked Mr and Mrs Y'oung to accept a china cabinet, two fireside chains, a dinner wagon and an afternoon tea service, towards which everybody in the district had contributed. The guests were accorded musical honours and cheers. Mr Y'oung replied on behalf of himself and family, expressing his thanks for the gifts and the hospitality which had been arranged for them. Mm Y'oung was wearing black georgette; Miss Ruth Young, magnolia silk; .Miss Jean Y'oung, black ■ satin; Miss Nora Y'oung, clover silk; Mesdames C. Young, black satin and silver lame; G. Y'oung, black lafleta; James Y'oung, black floral taffeta; W. Young, black and white pinafore frock; F. Young (Linton), navy floral; W. Jackson, brown lace; A. Barrow; Misses E. Y'oung (Linton); B.■ Jackson, lime .green taffeta; I. Jackson, floral sheer. The committee responsible <for the social arrangements consisted of Meters Allwright (chairman), A. Akers (secretary)., .... V. Claridge, G. Larsen, H. Barrow, 11. Phillips and H. Sanies. At a meeting of the garden circle .members present wore Mesdames Wilde (leader), Aitehison, Norman, Jackson, Cooksley, Larsen, Irwin, Samos and Percy. A programme for monthly .competition at the Women's Institute meetings was drawn up, those for May and June being; May, best quality onion and best, chrysanthemum; June, carrots and parsnips, and bloom. Mrs Wilde was appointed the competition judge forthe circle. The monthly meeting of the,, Women’s Institute was held in the hall, Mrs Irwin presiding. Final arrangements were made for the institute birthday. The competition for the May meeting is for paper hats, which will be given to the children at the birthday party. A bring and buy stall will bo held for institute funds. Hostesses for the month will be Mesdames Alvo, Bond, Y 7. Claridge, Croad, Collins, Gregory and Horn. Miss Dorothy Harnett, of Otorohanga, who has been visiting “Wood.'cigh” as the guest of Mr and Mrs Jackson is now staying with Mr and Mrs Buglass, of 'J'aue Road. Mr and Mm J. Hansen visited Wellington during the week-end. Alisa Joan Robbins, of Palmerston North, is visiting Mr and Mrs Hocking. Air and Mrs James Young, of Pipiriki, are spending their annual holiday with Mr and Airs S. R. Y'oung. Air and Airs John Y'oung, of New/ Plymouth, were home at the week-end as the guests of Air and Airs S. R. Young. Airs Norman is visiting relatives in Alasterton. Mrs Y 7 ile, of Poplar Road, is on holidayin Paeroa and Alatamata. Miss Clare Alabey is ' staying at Hopelands, near Woodville, during the holidays. The Opiki Sports Club held a euchre and dance party on Tuesday. The floor was in excellent condition, and music was supplied by a professional orchestra. Extras , were played by Aliss P. Wilton, of Tokomaru. The opportunity was taken by Air AI. Tantrum to make a presentation on behalf of the young people of Opiki to members of the Y'oung family, who arc shortly leaving the district. The gifts were made in appreciation of the services rendered by them and a tribute to the esteem in which they arc held. Air Lewis Y'oung replied. Aliss' Ruth Y'oung was unavoidably absent. Aliss Jean Y'oung wore a petunia taffeta skirt with magnolia satin blouse and white fur cape; Aliss Nora Young, clover silk and black fur fabric cape. A waltzing competition Was held and Air J. Woodland, of Palmerston North, acted as judge. The winning couple were Air and Mrs J. Alabey, of Opiki. The winners of the euchre were Air P. R. Krivan and Air D. Y'oung. Novelty dances were won by Air L. Simpeon and Aliss J. Parkes, and Alias L. Tews and partner. Mr P. Southce was AI.C. and Air F. Paget was in charge of the euchre.
