MARION. May 9. The Mayor (Mv F , Purnell), presided at a meeting of the joint Council of the Order c-f St. John and the Ra.‘cl Cress S*ocictv when the Marton district campaign for the Sick and Wounded Fund was launched. The object cf the campaign is to raise £250,000 as quickly' as possible. The meeting decided to set up a committee to conduct the campaign. Mr J. A. Bush was elected cJiaiirnan, Mr J. R. L. Stanford deputy-chairman, Mr B. Cochran secretary, and Mr Burnell treasurer. At a meeting of this committee, it was decided to take up (lie challenge issued by Taihape to sec which town could raise the most money. Contributions already received :—A lari on Sub-Centre Red Cross, £100; Dr W. S. R. Dick, £10; Sash and Door Co. £10; Deighton and l’urncll, £10; Mrs Burnell, £10; Mr and Mrs T. Barton, £5 ss; Mr and Mrs Stanford, £5; Mr and Mrs Christensen, £5 ss; Mr and Mrs Bush, £5; Marton Borough Council, £10; Mr and Mrs A. J. B. Cicely, £5 ss; Mr and Mrs C.'L. Harris, £5; F. Burnell £10; Mr and Mrs W. F. Stevens, £lO. Total to date £2OO 15s. At a sitting of the Medical Beard in Marton, yesterday, the following recruits for military service were examined Messrs J. J. Sinclair, P. D. Wootton, 11. D. Gordon, V. C. Gordon. A. B. Marshall, 0. Wilson, W. 11. Summcrtcn, J. H. Coldwell, A. T. Sparks, W. J. Boyle, N. M. Langdon.
