TE ARAKURA.
(From Our Own Corresixmdent.) TE ARAKURA, May 8. Airs -H. AI. Whisker presided at the AJay committee meeting of the Te _ Arakura Women’s Institute. It was decided to change the date of the open evening ill respect to a request from the Awahuri Institute. Members were reminded that the competitions will be for an eggless cake, and chrysanthemum. The committee unanimously favoured sending a delegate to the Dominion conference in Wellington in July. Arrangements were made regarding the birthday celebrations in J une. Full particulars will be advertised later. AJr and Airs D. Salter, of Pahiatua, are spending a holiday at Tc Arakura as the guests of Mr and Airs J. H. Bennett. Mrs J. J. Hume has returned home after visiting Dannevirke and Wellington. Air _ 11. Haythornc has been a visiter to Wellington. Recent: visitors to the Exhibition were Mr and Airs A. Buick, Air Cleaver, Mr C. Jones, Airs H. Haythorno, Air E. Faulkner, Mr O. Jones and Aliss Hansen. Aliss Af. ’Haythorno lias laken up the profession of nursing in Foilding. Congratulations have been extended to Aliss Merle Hume on her success in the Manawatu competitions. A. social was held in the hall at the close
of the school term. The programme opened with the children singing the New Zealand National Anthem with Mrs Burnham as accompanist, and the following items wore interspersed with dances: Vocal solos, j Miss M. Hume with Miss NY Hume at the piano; elocutionary items, Miss Ik Haytliornc; piano and harmonica duet, Masters Jack and M. Bowatcr; pianoforte I solo. Miss Thelma Griffin; vocal solos, Mr R. Stewart, with Mrs Burnham as aeeom--1 panist; vocal solo, Mr I. Lawton; _ Maori 'songs, party of Maori boys. Children’s dances were won by Ngairo Griffin, Pat Dixon, Rarigi Hamona and Kevin Barnes; adult dances by Miss P. Haythorne and Mr H. Talbot. Mr R. Stewart (chairman !of the School Committee) extended thanks to all who had assisted in making the function so enjoyable. At a meeting of the ladies’ patriotic circle Mrs Bradlcv presided. An excellent assortment of knitted and sewn articles, together with some cooked goods, were handed in. after which further wool and material were distributed. j The annual meeting of the KauvhataAorangi Herd Improvement Association was held in the ball. Mr E. P. Nielsen (consulting officer of the Wellington-Hawke’s Bay Association) presided. Mr T. Page (secretary) .addressed the gathering after which the following committee was elected : Messrs W. J. Slack (convener), G. Lind, C. Houghton, and D. Johnston. A public (meeting will be held at a later date when all farmers will be invited to attend.
