BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Mayor (Mr R. R. Johnston) commented at last night’s meeting of the Woodville Borough Council that tlie agenda paper was the lengthiest that had come before the council for a considerable time. Members present were Crs. J. T. Horne, J. Sullivan, E. J, Harding, A. Olssen, A. IJ. Hustwick and C. Forbes. Cr. H. Gaibriath was granted leave of absence. Mr A. K. Boyd sought permission to cut down bluegum trees which were a nuisance to his property.—The Mayor said he saw no objection to the request being granted and moved in this direction, Cr. Sullivan seconding the motion. Cr Olssen said he would not like to see the avenue of trees destroyed. They were an asset from the point of view of their beauty and value as a break-wind. Cr. Hustwick supported the opinion expressed by Cr. Olssen. The Mayor said it must be admitted the trees were not very ornamental, and the fact of the leaves being blown across adjoining properties was definitely detrimental to the pastures. Cr. Harding pointed to the legal aspect of the question. He thought it would be found that if Mr Boyd could prove the trees were creating a nuisance the council would be compelled to fell them. The Mayor’s motion to grant the request was eventually carried on a division, Crs. Horne, Olssen and Hustwick asking that their votes be recorded against the resolution’.

At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, the Dannevirke Hospital Board advised that it had completed its estimates for the year ending March 31, 1940. The amount payable by the council was £lB4 6s 6d. The health inspector (Mr S. B. Reed, Palmerst-on North) reported that there , had been no cases of infectious diseases during April. .A sample of water taken from the borough supply for bacteriological examination proved quite satisfactory.
