THE COMPETITIONS.
HIGH MUSICAL STANDARD. The Manawatu Competitions Society’s seventeenth annilal festival was continued to-day, when much’ interest-., in the programme was again evident. Mr C. H. Davies, of Christchurch, who is judging the vocal and instrumental sections, is enthusiastic about the musical standard and musicians of New Zealand. He considers that therb arc quite a number of musicians scattered throughout the country who can compare favourably with , those from England. Palmerston North had shown as high, a standard as anywhere, he told a “Manawatu Standard”, representative. Mr Davies was particularly enthusiastic about Zane Bartlett, who won the open violin solo class this morning, and who in his opinion is another Alan Loveday, though he has’ not yet ’■ acquired Alan Loveday’s smoothness.--: 1 Both Mr Davies and liis wifc, who has accompanied him to ‘ Palmerston North, take a prominent part in musical activities in Christchurch and , Mrs Davies is,a member of Dr Bradshaw’s centennial choir. * ; Additional results are : Vocal and instrumental music —Violin solo, open: Zane Bartlett (Palmerston North), “Sonatine,” T : 3 entries.
