OFFICIAL OPENING
COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL. FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. The 17th annual festival of the Manawatu Competitions Society was declared open at the Opera House, lastevening, by the president, Mr J. A. Nash, who introduced the' judges and welcomed visitors amt competitors. On the stage with Mr Nash were Mrs Isabel Halligan (Wellington), judge of elocution j Miss Jeanne Horne (Wellington)', judge of dancing; Mrs M. CHannah (Puniho, Taranaki), judge of national dancing; Mr Claude H. Davies (Christchurch), judge of vocal and instrumental music; Miss Zita Leamy, F.T.C.L., L.11.5.M., (Palmerston North), the official accompaniste; and Mr K. G. Chamberlain, secretary. Mr Nash submitted apologies for absence from the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. Mansford), who iorwarded best wishes for the festival, and he extended to the visitors and the audience a very cordial welcome. It was very gratifying to the society that the people of Palmerston North were still interested in the competitions, lie. said. This year the number of competitors was 400, and totalled 1000 entries. Of those 400 performers over 200 came from outside Palmerston North, which showed the interest taken elsewhere in the festival. Last year, Mr Nash recalled. Mrs I. Powell had done a great deal of hard work in securing a number of trophies. which had been awarded by the judges to the best of their ability. Unfortunately, these awards had been followed by a lot of newspaper correspondence, so that the society had decided this year that there would be no trophies awarded except those for the championships. Mr Nash added that members of the society and visitors missed greatly the presence of the late Mr W. C. London, who passed away a short time ago. He had been an enthusiastic worker for the festivals over a long period of years. All who came to Palmerston North to the festivals knew Mr Loudon, and all would regret liis passing. The speaker expressed a very cordial welcome to the judges. The credentials they possessed were quite sufficient for the society and the members of the society expected that they would give satisfaction, both to the parents and to the children. Mi Nash thanked the judges very much for what they had done already. As far as the- society was concerned, Mr Nash proceeded, there was only one Mr Chamberlain and if it were not for his services the speaker feared there would be no festivals. The society’s members also felt grateful to the stage manager (Mr R. Bailey) and the accompaniste, Miss Leamy. was indispensable. (Applause.) The society had a very willing band of women workers.
Speaking for the judges, Mr Davies said they very happy to be adjudicating at Palmerston North. They had been very well looked after and had received every attention and consideration, while there was also a very happy atmosphere with the audience. A telegram wishing the society a successful festival was gpceived from Miss Valerie McCoombe, of Hastings, who was a competitor at earlier Palmerston North festivals .and also a championship winner on several occasions.
At the demonstration concert on Saturday night several members of the Wellington Society will attend as aniegts. They will include Mr and Mrs Barton Ginger, Mr. / Mrs and Miss Martin. Mr G, W. Morgan, and Mr and Mrs D. J. Constable. Awards made last evening were: INSTRUMENTAL.
