WIN FOR KIA TOA.
FEILDING OLD BOYS UNLUCKY. Kia Toa beat Feilding Old Boys at the Showgrounds by 14 points to 8, but the Feilding side were rather unlucky. Territorially they had the better of the game and showed much more enterprise in the backs. Kia Toa excelled mainly in the forwards and relied on hard rucking tactics to gain ground. Feilding Old Boys lost, however, by infringing the rules, and three penalties against them resulted in the kicks going over. Feilding Old Boys also scored from a penalty, and both sides gained converted tries, that of Kia Toa being a last-minute opportunist effort against which Feilding had no chance. The Feilding backs were faced with a determined defence but would have been better rewarded for their efforts to open the game by another score. The teams were: Kia Toa. —Carr. Stenberg. Harvey, Leader, Parris, Thomas, Quinn, Barliao, Pearson, Speedy, Whyte, Williams. Coombe. Thurston, Judd. Feilding Old Boys.—-11. Glovn, Dashwood, H. Waugh, W. Trask. Dewe, Harford, R. Jarrett. Bainbridge, W. McLeod, M. Fade, M. Oliver. J. Finlay, B. Waldegrave, Rutherford, P. Wells. Feilding Old Boys attacked at the beginning and after several good ba,ck movements by them Kia Toa took a| hand, and for a time play moved lin and down in midfield. A free kick gave Carr a chance at goal from wide
out and he succeeded. Feilding Old Boys then pressed hard. The backs went downfield and Dashwood was tackled when he had a chance for a run, but the backs came away again in another good movement in which the whole line handled, enabling Dashwood to go over in the corner. Finlay converted from a difficult angle. Kia Toa worked back slowly to Feilding Old Boys’ territory and were awarded another free kick outside the twentyfive. Again Carr put over a good kick, . Just before half-time Finlay had a j chance to score with a penalty kick I for Feilding, but failed j Feilding attacks at the beginning of j the second half wo.e followed by midfield play from which Kia Ton, going to the Feilding twenty-five, received another free kick and Carr again succeeded with it. Play went from one end of the field to the other, but eventually, when Feilding were placed in a, handy position by a good run by their backs, and set up pressure, they were awarded a penalty kick which Finlay put over. Their efforts to score further failed, however, and just on t'me. when Kia Toa were near the Feilding twenty-five, Williams secured in a line-out and broke away, handing on to Coombe, who ra.n well clear and scored under the posts. Carr converted and fhe game ended: Kia Toa 14. Feilding Old Boys 8. Mr A. Neville was the referee. j
