SCHOOL ROAD RACES.

The annual cross-country run for secondary boys and the road race for primary boys were held on Friday afternoon to mark the end of the first term at the Woodville District High School. The events were watched by a large number of parents and others interested. There were 18 runners in the primary event. The course of approximately two miles took them down Bevan’s Road, Howry Road, McLean Street and Vogel ‘Street, to finish at the starting point on the school football field. A. Currie had a notable win'offj scratch in Smin 59sec. For second i place there was an exciting finish be- 1 tween J. O’Neil (losec) and" D. Warnock (45sec), the former coming in l only leec ahead of Warnock. O'Neil’s actual time was Dm in 41sec and Warnock’6 lOmin, 12sec. Fourth place was gained by. G. Zimmerman (30sec) after an even more exciting , struggle in which he reached the tape just in front of R. Stock (55sec.J, the times being 10.5 and 10.30 2-5 respectively. Then came G. Clark (30sec.), W. Scott (10); E. Hammond (15) and A-. Fraser (60). Other starters were L. Faulkner •(15), V. Waugh (25), D. Oxenham (35), D. Walker (35), IV Seed (40), and S. Reid (60). The eight competitors in the secondary event were required to run a distance of about 3i miles over a course similar to that for the primary race, except that from So wry Road it took in part of the racecourse and several paddocks on the western side of McLean (Street, Vogel Street in this instance being reached via Ferguson Street. R. Peebles’s win off 15sec in 20min. llsec (18.56 actual tune) gave him the Dorrington Cup for the fastest time in addition to the Sullivan Cup for the winner of the race. He came home lmin. 19sec. ahead of J. Faulkner (45sec.) who clocked 20min. 45sec. The rest of the field were placed as follow.: —F. Hardy (60) 21.12, J. McPeak (90) 22.4, J. Harding (scr.) 21.4, J. Martin (15) 21.20, K. Uifknis (60), A. Okson (90). The races were conducted by the following officials: Starter, Mr M. Desmond; timekeeper, Mr B. Goodman; handicappers, Messrs R. Irwin and J. S. Mcßean; judges, Messrs R. It. Johnston, L. Skinner and E. J. Harding. Competitors, officials and visitors afterwards assembled in the High School for afternoon tea (provided by tlic High School girls) and the presentation of trophies.- Ill‘(calling on the donors (Mr arid- Mrs J./Sullivan) to make the ■presentations,-'•the chairman of the School Committee (Mr R. R: Johnston) ..remarked -thats/it' - was the tenth occasion on which the. races had been run. The winuers were to be con-

gratulated. on their fine performances, that of R. Peebles in winning the secondary event and also p.ntting up the fastest time being particularly outstanding. A pleasing feature was that all the competitors in each eveilt completed the course, Mr and Mrs Sullivan handed, the, Sullivan Primary Cup-(donated annually and'won outright) to A. Currie, and the Dorrington Challenge Cup (fastest time) and Sullivan Secondary Cup to 11. Peebles, who will also have his name engraved on the Sullivan Shield Mr Sullivan congratulated the winners, for-whom cheers were given, the gathering concluding with cheers for Mr and Mrs Sullivan.
