STICKERS OK CARGO.
MAGISTRATE’S WARNING. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 3. In fining Thomas Janies Shanahan, a waterside worker, £lO for distributing subversive stickers issued by the Communist Party in Auckland on cargo in a vessel’s hold, the Magistrate (Mr C. R. Orr-Walker) issued a warning that any others who might come before him on a similar charge would receive the- maximum penalty, namely £IOO or three months’ imprisonment, unless they could show why the maximum penalty should not lie imposed. Shanahan pleaded guilty to the charge of distributing a sticker entitled “Fight Against Conscription and Imperialist War.” The police said stickers such as those described were found on cargo being unloaded from the motor vessel Kapiti at Whangarei. Counsel. for Shanahan submitted tlfat the offence had occurred only 15 days after tno regulations were gazetted. He had no connection with the stickers on overseas ships. The Magistrate said the punishment inflicted should be such as to deter other people from committing a similar offence.
