FARM PRODUCTION

decline in pig industry. STATE ACTION URGED. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, April 19. “Unless' the Government is prepared to put £IOO,OOO or £200,000 into the industry 1 don’t think there is any chance-of increased production,” said the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr H. D. Caro), chairman of the AVaikato District Pig Council, at an executive meeting last night, when the question of the Government providing cheap pig feed was under consideration. Mr Caro said cheap food alone would not increase production. Money was no object in wartime as far as the production of troops was concerned, and as farm production was just as important more money should be iound to stimulate production in the same way as it was being found for the production of the army. AA’liereas Canada had been able to increase its production by over 30 per cent., New Zealand’s pig production had decreased by 30 per cent. “There does not seem to be any argument about it,” continued Mr Caro, “that the Now Zealand producer is not doing his job.” Mr C. P. Carrington, district pig supervisor, .said it appeared that pigraising was more or less a depression business. If butterfat dropped to 10d a pound to-morrow New Zealand would have all the pig production it required. He thought the present waste of whey in some instances at factories was a criminal offence.
