GURKHA'S DESTRUCTION.
VICTIM OF BOMBS.
MEDICAL OFFICER’S HEROISM. (British Official Wireless.) Received April 18, 10.20 a.m. RUGBY, April 17. A survivor of the sunken British destroyer Gurkha says the ship was bombed five times from the air by the Germans in the action off Norway. “Bombs were whizzing around from about two dozen enemy machines. The bomb which did the real damage was a direct hit that almost shook the ship out of the water,” he said. “While we were scrambling to safety we were machine-gunned, and bullets rained on the decks.” The survivor paid a high tribute to the Gurkha’s medical officer, who actually continued to carry out- operations on the wounded while the ship was sinking.
