DEFENCE COUNCIL.
PREMIER’S RETORT. WELLINGTON, April 16. “I propose to take no further serious notice of Air Barnard’s statements, as apparently he is under the impression that everybody in the Labour Party was out' of step but himself, said tho Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser), at the conclusion of brief comment yesterday on the statement by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and member for Napier (Hon. W. E. Barnard) on the functioning of the Council of Defence “Mr Barnard. T notice, made reference to the meetings of the Council of Defence to which Air Lee and Air Barnard were co-opted by Air Savage.” Mr Eraser said. “After the personal attack on Air Savage in December last, and the subsequent action taken by Cabinet, tho late Prime Minister considered that it was impossible to continue to hold the meetings, but the work of the council was carried out bv the Alinisters directly associated with tho war activities, meeting in frequent consultation with tho Chiefs of Staff. Subsequent events amply justified the Prime Minister’s action.”
