AUCKLAND WEST SEAT.
LABOUR NOMINATIONS. POSITION AT NAPIER. WELLINGTON, April 16. Though no official statement is forthcoming on the matter it appears from inquiries made in Wellington yesterday that the resignation of Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P. for Napier, from the New Zealand Labour Party will he accepted as a matter o! course by the national executive when it meets shortly. With the acceptance of the resignation, it appears probable that some statement will he issued dealing with Mr Barnard’s position from a Labour Party viewpoint. Ibis may take the form of calling on him to resign the Napier seat and contest it against an official candidate. The national executive will also have to deal with nominations from the Auckland Labour Representation C'.mmitteo for the Auckland West seat-, made vacant by the death of Mr Savage. So far there are 10 nominations, including one woman. These are: Messrs j. P. McCrcad.v, J. Sayegh, H. G. Staley, J. S. Stewart, F. G. Young, C. Bailey, ,J. J. Sullivan, P. Carr, J. T. Jennings and Mrs M. M. Drearer. The final selection is likely to be difficult bv reason of the fact that those nominated are all prominent members of the Labour movement with claims considered to bo of more or less equal merit. Airs Dreaver polled comparatively well against Air W. P. Eiulean, AI.P. for Reinucra, in the last election, and is a member of the Auckland Hosoital Board. Mr Sullivan is a leading Auckland barrister. Mr AleCroat!v is secretary of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee. Air Savegh is immediate past president of this organisation and a member of several local bodies. Air Staley is president of the Auckland West branch of the .Labour Party. Air Stewart is a former city councillor and executive officer of tlie Auckland Labour Representation Committee. All' Young is secretary of tho Auckland Hotel Workers’ Union and president of the Auckland district council .of the Federation of Labour. Air Bailey is an Auckland city councillor. Air Jennings is a former president of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee. Air Carr is an Auckland city councillor. The Auckland Labour Representation Committee has shown the keenest interest in the nominations, and there were 130 delegates- at a recent meeting. . As a preliminary to the selection of a candidate by the national executive from the 10 put forward this meeting adopted the following resolution: “That this meeting of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee delegates, representing 17 branches and 68 affiliated unions, with a membership of 29.000, pledges itself loyally to accept the decision of the national executive and also actively to support and work for the Labour candidate selected by the national executive to contest the Auckland West by-election.”
