RUGBY FOOTBALL.

TEAMS AT PRACTICE. In order to prepare teams for the opening of the ltugby football season, tho University (Alassey College) and Kia Toa Clubs played senior and junior matches at the college on oaturday. In the senior game University won by 18 points to nil, the score comprising six tries scored in dashing stylo by tho wing-threequarters the outstanding player on the field was Bowler, a Taranaki representative, who as a winger lor University scored , four tries, displaying a fine turn ot speed combined with the ability to| swerve and sidestep. Two tries were, scored bv the other winger, Tubaki, a| junior last vear and a prominent member of tho Christ’s College first filteen two years ago. The Kia loa team \ias not at full strength and included a number of juniors. The teams were : University.—Kearney; Bowler, Herbert Tutaki; Stewart, Land; Smith; Barnford, Green, AVallacc: Craven, McLaren, Robertshawe, Seeley; Allen. Kia Toa. —Wills; Stenberg, Marshall, Shaw; Taylor, Thomas; Quinn; Fitch Leader, Grindrod; Barnao, AVilliams,' Carr, McDonald; Jameson. Air A. AVcston was the referee. The junior match resulted in a win for Kia Toa by 11 points to 3. Several other clubs also held practiccs on Saturday. KIA TOA CLUB’S PICNIC. Tlic Kia Toa Football Club held its ' annual picnic at the Hokowhitu Do- i main when about 200 members and friends were present. Sports were bold - in conjunction with the AlcKcnzie Cup. ; Results were: Stenberg first with 16 i points; Carr second with 14 points; i Shaw third with 13 points. Results o 1 other races were: Girls, AA r . AlcDonald 1, Kilpatrick 2. J. Doolan 3; boys (junior), B. O’Brien 1, J. Fleatley 2, O’Brien 3; boys (senior), Spencer 1, Burrell 2, Richardson 3; married ladies race Airs Ash 1, Alesdames Heatley and ’ Clarke equal 2; 75 yards open, Pilcher 1, G. Brown 2, A. Boldt 3; committeemen’s race, J McDonald 1; three-legged race, L. Alullins and Airs Ash 1 Stenberg and Shaw 2, Emmett and Dench 3. Air 11. R. Crawford presented the prizes won during tho day and commented on the energetic work ; of the committee and tho able man- ; ner in which they had carried out their . duties. .
