SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS.
MASSEY COLLEGE STUDENTS. The Massey College Board of Governors met on Thursday, there being present: Alessrs A. Alorton (chairman), T. U. Wells, G. Grey Campbell, P. Kearins, 0. Mourad, A. E. Alansford, At. H. Oram, L. H Collinson and the principal (Professor G. S. Peren) and Professor W. Riddet. Apologies for absence were received from Alessrs H. M. Christie, P. Levi and R. A. Candy. Regret was expressed at the passing of the late Rt. Hon. AI. J. Savage and the board is tendering to the Government its sympathy and recording the loss occasioned to the Dominion. The Shell Scholarship for 1940 has been awarded to Air L. It. Wallace, of Kaikohe. The scholarship is awarded on the candidate’s attainments during the course for the degree of B.Agr.Sc. Air Wallace is at present attending the college for the degree of Al.Agr.Sc. The Farmers’ Union Scholarship for 194041 has been awarded Air J. A. Sutherland, Al.Agr.Sc., of Te Kuiti. This scholarship is a research one of the annual value of £2OO and is tenable at the college, the scholar being required to undertake original research work. The scholarship arising from a bequest by the late Air Wm. Reed, of Palmerston North, open to ex-pupils of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, has been awarded Air L. Wliibley, of the Pio l’io Co-operative Dairy Company. The date of the annual graduation ceremony was fixed as Wednesday, June 12, at S p.m. The diploma in sheep farming (supplementary list) was awarded to A. Olise, of Japan, and L. R. Watters (Hastings). Further donations towards the cost of tools and equipment for instructional purposes in the carpenter’s shop were received with thanks from Alessrs E. R. Black (Gisborne), H. B. Johnston (Cheltenham) and R. D. J.night (Longburn). A donation of 52 books for the college library was received from Mr A. C. Alorton, of the College staff. The board also acknowledged assistance by all who made donations or lent implements and machines for demonstration purposes in the machinery hall. It was reported by Professor Peren that, now that the machinery hall was completed, it was- hoped to arrange with various firms for the loan ot new models of implements and machines for a limited period so that they could be placed on display in the hall and demonstrations given on them. By this means it is hoped to keep students in close touch with improvements in farm machinery. The enrolments for the term number 98 compared with 92 last year. The shorter courses do not commence until the second term.
