REPRESSION IN DENMARK. FOOD ACCUMULATIONS. COPENHAGEN, April 11. The Germans have ordered the mobilisation of the Danish air raid defence organisation and assumed control of the Press. They have instructed the papers to announce that the occupation was entirely due to Allied acts and intentions. Danish and Norwegian journalists in Berlin have been released. Stocks of bacon are piling up in Denmark. Meanwhile the Lower House has decided to buv American goods to the value of £2 500 000, the extent of the American credit. A London message says that the Times says that the German economic gains resulting from the invasion of Scandinavia are not only great because of the natural resources of the occupied territories but also because of the extraordinary stocks which Denmark has accumulated recently. Denmark’s petrol stocks alone total a quarter of a. million tons. Britain imported half her bacon from Denmark, one-third of her eggs and one-quarter of her butter.

Britain obtained 40 per rent, of her iron ore through Norway, all of special grade for which British industry was equipped. She also obtained important forro alloys from Norway and great quantities of timber and woodpulp for newsprint from Scandinavia generally. After conferring with President Roosevelt (states a Washington report) the Danish Minister CMr Bekauffmann) announced that the President was continuing to recognise him diplomatically.

Officials told the New York Times nrivately that tliev believed the United States would invoke the Monroe Doctrine in connection with Greenland .if necessary, but had no intention of issuing a declaration at present. Iceland possibly con’d be included, though it did not lie wholly within the hemisphere. Export and import credits for Scandinavian countries have been temporarily rescinded. President Roosevelt by an executive order lias frozen all balances in foreign exchange transactions involving Norway and Denmark and their nationals. Ottawa reports that members of the Government are discussing the possibility of a Canadian air patrol over Greenland and Iceland, using meteorological bases on Hudson Strait.
