RAIDS ON SCOTLAND
GERMAN FAILURE. . SCAPA ESCAPES DAMAGE. LONDON, April 11. The Air Ministry states that the enemy carried out a number of bombing raids on the north of Scotland last evening. Two Heinkels were shot down while attacking a convoy in the Moray [ Firth and it is believed that a third was also destroyed. Later the enemy attacked Scapa Flow in successive waves in large and small formations. Bombs were dropped and machine-gun atacks carried out against Stromncss and Kirkwall, hut the raid was abortive. No warships or other ships or property were damaged, and the only casualty was a man slightly injured. Anti-aircraft guns opened fire and both the fleet air arm and fighter aircraft were sent up. Jt is certain that three enemy bombers were brought down hv anti-aircraft fire and one by the fighter aircraft. Two more were severely damaged and are unlikely to have reached their bases. German ’planes definitely known to have been lost while raiding Britain or coastal shipping now total 61, while a dozen others were damaged and unlikely to have reached their base, states a Press Association report.
