PLACES IN THE NEWS.
GOTHENBURG’S IMPORTANCE. Gotenburg or Goteborg, the Swedish city and seaport not far from which the big naval engagement is reported, is on the west coast rear the entrance to the Skagerrak between Denmark and Norway. The city, which is 285 miles by railway south-west of Stockholm, the capital, is traversed hv numerous canals and is served by six railways. It has a cathedral, town hall, exchange, museum, university and library and many other impressive buildings. Exports include timber, wood pulp, joinery, paper, iron, glass and matches. There are shipyards, saw and flour mills, tanneries and sugar refineries. FAROES ISLANDS. The Faroes, (or Faeroes) Islands are a group of 21 islands in the North Atlantic belonging to Denmark and lying about 195 miles north-west of tiie Shetlands Islands. The chief industries are sheep-raising, cattle-breed-ing, wild-fowling, whaling and fishing. The largest island is Stromo, which contains the capital, Thorsliavn. The people have a local Parliament and have been represented in the Danish Parliament. The area is 540 square miles and the population approximately 24,200.
