HOROWHENUA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, April 10. Mrs McHugh, ot Canterbury, n muchtravelled lady, was the guest of Mr and Mrs W. Galwell at Ihe week-end. The death occurred at the Wellington Hospital on Monday of Mrs Cootes, wife of Mr T Contes, at one time a resident of Otaki. The death has occurred at the resiojucc ot his daughter, Mrs A. J. Farley, iof Packakariki, of Mr Henry Thomas i Cooper, for many years the schoolmaster at |To Iloro and Packakariki. The deceased gentleman, who was in his 83rd year, was well-known in this district and was greatly respected. Mr S. Keid, who has been connected with the staff at Otaki Railway for the past three years, lias been transferred to Tahora (Taranaki). Prior to his leaving, Mr Weenik (stationmaster), on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Reid with a chiming clock, and wished Mr and Mrs Reid success. Mr Low, of Levin, will fill the vacancy at Otaki. Large quantities of violets arc being dispatched from Otaki to the Wellington markets each day. Heavy rain oi a very welcome nature foil in Otaki last night and to-day. It will have a beneficial effect on pastures and ear dens. A farewell social was abided the Rev. Mr Catman, Mrs Gntman and. family, at the Methodist Church last night, when presentations were made.
