AMATEUR CINE SOCIETY.

The Manawatu Amateur Cine Society held its monthly meeting at the cl it broom in Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s buildings. The subject for the evening was “Exposure and Exposure Meters.” A paper read bv Dr. T. R. Vernon formed the basis of an interesting discussion. The photographers of the old school judged exposure by the eye, but as the eye is a notoriously unreliable instrument, their success was no doubt due to a well trained unconscious memory, he said. Experience, however, could not be quickly obtained and an unconscious memory was difficult and expensive to calibrate so the photo-electric meter is the modern substitute. This delicate instrument, which was reputed to measure energy a million times less than that produced by a fly buzzing on a window pane, was not, however, foolproof and the best results still required a modicum of experience and common sense. The tests recently carried out by the society on several makes of meters revealed clearly their limitations. The test films were projected, together with some excellent colour film from the cameras of Mr IV. A. IVators and Mr Grotrian, of Pohangina.
