PERSONAL. Captain L. Laskov, who has been in charge of the Pahiatua Salvation Army Corps for the past eight months, lias received notice of her transfer to Sydenham, Christchurch. COUNTY COUNCIL. At a mooting of the Pahiatua County Council on Tuesday, Cr A. W. Bissct presided. Others present were Crs J. R Nelson, H. R. Whitta, A. 11. Eglinton, F. V. Bryant, F. T. liorne, F. S. 11. Bolton, T. Fouiiy, and C. 11. Hodgins. The chairman stated that the county fund showed a credit of £471 7s lOd and tlicoverseer and clerk wero to ho congratulated on the wav they had worked out the estimates. Reporting on the collection of rates, the treasurer (Mr J. Hutton) stated that the percentage of rates collected for the year 1939-40 (inclusive of rebates allowed) represented 98.8 per cent, of the amount levied as against 99.03 per cent, collected for the same period of last year. The percentage of arrears collected was equivalent to 55.76 per cent, of the amount outstanding at March 31. 1939. The percentage of arrears collected (or the previous year was 60.99 per cent. The total amount of rates outstanding under all headings at March 31, 1940, was £245 19s lOd. Messrs Chapman, Tripp, Watson, James and Co. advised that they were unable to recommend to their principals that the security offered in connection with the advance of £6OOO of (lie bridges loan was a good and valid one. Mr Hutton stated that it was in his opinion not worth while proceeding further along this lino, there now being no option but to borrow elsewhere. 'The Public Works Depart merit forwarded the balance of the monetary authority, £321 (£1 for £1) for the Mangaramarama bridge. The Department of Labour wrote asking 11 to council to submit early information. on works proposed to be undertaken using No. 13 scheme labour, for about a year in advance. —It was remarked that the county should use No. 13 scheme men only for work of benefit to itself, and not just to find work for thorn. It was decided that the council was not willing to commit itself to a subsidy. In ease of emergency, however, the chairman, clerk and overseer were empowered to deal with eases as they arose. Messrs Seaton, Sloddcn and Pavitt advised that the proposals for Brcmncr’s bridge had been approved, and that the quest ion of monetary authority was receiving consideration. The Masierton County Council forwarded a schedule of heavy iraflio fees for the quarter ended February 29, 1940. The countv paid in £154 11s 5d and received £202 16s 7d. NOTES. The following is the draw for C grade lady golf players for Saturday : —Miss Mc'Shcrry and Miss Tinttoy, Miss Hodgins and Miss E. 'Taylor, Miss Tinkham and Mrs Watson, Mies do Beer and Miss Smyth and Miss Goulton. At the County Council meeting on Tuesday, a tribute to the memory of the late Mr Thomas Hodgins, who died in Pahiatua recently was paid by the chairman (Cr A. W. Bisset). “To those who knew Mr Hodgins in his prime,” said Cr. Bisset, “ho was one of the leading councillors the county possessed.” Cr Bissett moved a resolution placing on record (he long and valued service of the late Mr Jlodeins as a member of the council and as chairman. This was carried. Cr C. 11. Hodgins briefly thanked the council on behalf of his mother, sister and himself, for their tribute to his father.
