MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

QUARTERLY STATISTICS. During the quarter ended March 31, 1940, the Magistrate’s Court in Feilding dealt with the following business, the figures in parentheses being for the corresponding period in 1939 :—Actions for civil debt, 39 (86); total amount sued for, £436 (£1073); civil processes received from other Courts for service on persons residing in the .Feilding district, 44 (62); Court sittings, 5 days for civil business (5) and 10 days for criminal business (12); number of persons charged with various offences, 70 (113); fees and fines collected, £166 (£320); judgment summonses issued, 21 (23). It will be noted that there was a decline in the business dealt with compared with the corresponding quarter in 1939. There are several reasons for this. Owing to Easter falling earlier this year the offices of legal practitioners were not open for several days in March, ft is also suggested that there have been fewer unemployed and that submission may account for the decrease in the number of actions for the recovery of debts. The records show that in 1938 and 1939 the business of the Magistrate’s Court was abnormal.
