PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS.
PLAN FOR UNIVERSAL SIGN. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. A universal sign to mark pedestrian crossings on the main streets of cities and towns throughout New Zealand is under consideration by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson). The present intention is to paint any available post or pillar with bands of black and white alternatively, or, where there is no post already available to erect one painted in the same fashion. , Mr Laurenson, who is on a business visit to Christchurch, said to-day that it was not proposed to have any lettering on the posts. It was hoped that it would not take long for the public to come to recognise the signs where a street could be safely crossed. A warning to motorists who persisted in cutting corners was issued by Mr Laurenson, who said that the large total of accidents over the Christmas and New Year holiday period had been attributable largely tc this fault. He had issued orders to the inspectors in his department to prosecute all offenders.
