A VIVID STORY.

THE MADRID EXPLOSION. Received January 31, 8.5 a.m. PERPIGNAN Jan. 29. Travellers from Madrid reaching France tell a vivid story of the great explosion on January 10 in a section of the underground line used for the storage of munitions. The explosion occurred just before noon. The population was spellbound momentarily, after which there was a scene of panic unparalleled since the first days of the air raids. Smoke rose from tremendous rents in the pavements. Soldiers formed a cordon round the area. Scenes of grief, fear and desperation marked the evacuation and it was evening before the fires were mastered by the flooding of the tunnel. A total of 106 dead and 230 injured were brought to the first-aid stations and countless others are still buried in the wrecked tunnel.
