JAPANESE HALTED. SUCCESS OF GUERRILLA TROOPS WITHERING FIRE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, Jan. 30. The Chinese claim to have repulsed with withering fire Japanese advancing northward on the railway from Nanking to Tientsin. Chinese guerrilla fighters captured Ibing cutting on the Nanking-Hang-chow railway. r A Tokio message states that the, Japanese claim that they have repulsed the Chinese attack at Tsining. The Chinese claim that they re- j pulsed the enemy advancing from Minyong on the Tientsin-Pukow railway, and also captured Mengyin. These counter-strokes are largely the result of Marshal Chiang Kaishek's personal visit to his troops. The Chinese prevented the Japanese from landing at Chekiang, near Ningpo. The Japanese have closed to foreigners all territory around Shanghai except Hungjao and Chapei, while they deal with Chinese carrying on guerrilla warfare. A Peking message says that the Chinese are reported to havo reached the south gate of Tsining, on the outskirts of which very severe fighting is in progress. An artillery battle continues at Wuhu. \ \ A Canton message says it is reported that Japanese made two air raids on IToihow, on French Hainan Island, killing several civilians and destroying dozens of houses. A Hankow message says that during a Japanese air raid an anti-air-craft shell struck the United States gunboat Luzon, killing a Chinese boatman and ‘ wounding the wireless operator.
