GENERAL’S WARNING
BRITAIN’S ATTITUDE IN EAST. RELATIONS WITH CHINA. JAPAN DESIRES CO-OPERATION. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 31, 9.35 a.in. SHANGHAI, Jan. 30. “I am afraid that if Britain goes beyond the policy of simply defending her interests in China and makes a determined stand to maintain her political and economic relations with the Kuomintang a very serious Anglo-Japanese conflict may arise,” declared General Matsui (Japanese commander) in an interview. General Matsui added that there was no doubt about Britain’s Ear East policy. Her support of the Kuomintang was emphasised bv the steadiness of the Chinese exchange since the outbreak of hostilities and the large amount of arms and ammunition supplied. “Japanese actions may have offended Britain, but Britain cannot take action behind Japan’s back in China, which is Japan’s lifeline and essential for her expansion, especially after Japan’s own growth and development. Nevertheless, 1 must not be represented as seeking trouble with Britain, with whom we desire co-operation,” added General Matsui.
