CAPTAIN CENSURED.
THE SAROS INQUIRY. MELBOURNE, Jan. 25. The Court of Inquiry brought in the following finding:—“That the loss of the steamer Saros on December 25 was due to the failure in his duty of Captain John Aitken.” ‘ The Court sat again to-day to hear the charge laid against Captain Aitken by the Director of Navigation (Captain J. K. Davis). The Court found that Captain Aitken’s failure to take the utmost precautions could not be regarded as such gross failure of duty as to warrant suspension or cancellation of his certificate, particularly in view of his long and honourable service, but such failure was deserving of censure.
The cargo steamer Saros (3304t0n5), owned by Australian Steamships, Ltd-, went ashore at Cape Everard, Eastern Victoria, 300 miles from Melbourne, in a dense fog in December.
