MESSAGES OF GOODWILL.
GREETINGS TO AUSTRALIA. 150TH ANNIVERSARY. SYDNEY, Jan. 14. Messages of goodwill to New South Wales have been received from nations all over the world by the Minister in Charge of the 150th Anniversary Celebrations (Mr Dunningham), and many of the nations, in addition, have sent their nati'onal flags as tokens of friendship. The following are extracts from several of the messages:— United States of America.—“ Nowhere will the celebrations of New South Wales be followed with more understanding and sympathy than in the _ United States of America. Australians and Americans have inherited, as a legacy, an individualism and selfconfidence. Australian civilsation, based on Anglo-Saxon belief in liberty and democracy, in the supremacy of law, in the sanctity of treaty obligations, and the need for international justice, has made a unique contribution to the progress of the world. America, as an old-time friend alike in times of peace and as an associate during the dark days of the Great War, wiTi wish to rejoice with Australia in 1938.”
The Viceroy of India.—“l have great pleasure in sending the warm congratulations of the Government of India.”
Mr de Valera (Eire) —“The Irish people, linked by so many ties of blood and sentiment to the Australian people, rejoice with them on this great occasion.” LINK WITH NEW ZEALAND. New Zealand.—“ The word Anzac symbolises the unity of Australia and New Zealand in defending their free nationhood, while in times of peace, 6port has been a strong link never frayed, or ever likely to be broken by keen rivalry.” The Prime Minister of South Africa (General Hertzog).—“Australians have worthily upheld the great traditions of those who have gone before. I gladly extend South Africa’s very best wishes. Southern Rhodesia. —“Many ties bind our two countries together. We are proud of our association, through the Empire, with those pioneers who ■founded New South Wales.”
Mr C. J. Pao, Consul-General for China. —“I have the honour to present, on behalf of my Government, a national flag of China and a message of goodwill, as tokens of the wholehearted congratulations of the Republic of China.” • Austria. —“The Government and people of Austria most cordially join in the commemoration of the 150th a.nniversary of the foundation of Australia.” Czechoslovakia.—“ln presenting the flag of our republic to the Government and people of New South Wales, with which we have friendly cultural nnd commercial relations, we express the best wishes of the Government and people of Czechoslovakia.” Denmark. —“Numerous Danes have found happy homes in Australia. I\e believe that our former compatriots will consecrate their efforts to the noble aim of Australia.” Holland.—“ Her Majesty’s Government considers this memorable event a very welcome opportunity to place on record the great value they attach to-the maintenance and strengthening of the links of our friendship.’ Hungary.—“We beg to assure Australia of the sympathies of the Royal Hungarian Government and of the whole Hungarian nation.” Switzerland.— “During these 15U years there have always existed between Switzerland and Australia the most friendly relations.” Norway. “The numerous links which happily bind Norway to Australia may be still further strengthened bv goodwill and co-operation.” "Messages have also been received . from Sweden. Turkey. Yugoslavia. Poland, Rumania, Lithuania, Finland, iEsthonia, Albania, Iraq, Saudi-Axabia, ; Chile, Brazil, Cuba, Uruguay, Domini(can Republic and Guatemala.
