HOROWHENUA ROADS

ENGINEER’S REPORT. .At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council, yesterday, a report on roads and other works was made by the engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewster), who stated:— “Tokomaru Riding: The grader lias been over practically all district roads and, with the exception of unravelling caused through the prolonged hot weather, the roads are in reasonable condition. Metal patching has been carried out on MakeruaRangitane (174 cubic yards) and Toko-maru-Poplar (4 cubic yards). The contractor has completed the deviation at the western end of Kingstone Road and the final payment is being made. During the month tenders were invited for the formation and metalling of 14 chains of Linton Drain Rode! and the supply of approximately 80 cubic yards of metai on to Tokomaru Valley Road. No tender was received for either job. Tenders are also invited for cutting back five corners on Kaihinau road. It is to be hoped that contractors will take an interest in this work. The bridge deckings on Okuku Road have been spiked down. Whirokino Riding.— Metal patching is being carried out on various district roads, the supply being drawn from the crusher at the Tararua pit. Quite an amount of metal is yet reqired on district roads east of No. 60 Main Highway. The No. 1 bridge on Muhunoa East Road has been repainted. The grader has been over various district roads, which are in fair condition. Two bridges on Hogg’s road, Kuku, are in a very bad way. It was reported some months back that these could be replaced with concrete culverts. To replace No. 1 bridge 12-inch diameter pipes would suffice and to replace No. 2 bridge 3ft. diameter pipes would be sufficient. The necessary pipes for this work have been ordered and the installation should be carried out at an early date. Main Highways.—The contractor is now at work on leconstruction of No. 372 main highway end is making reasonable progress. Prior to the holidays all scrub and growth was cut back from corners on highways to give better vision. Ranger.—The ranger reports having dealt with seven head of wandering stock. For the year ending Deci her 31, 1331 dogs were registered and to date for the current year 111 dogs have been registered. Building Permits.—Eight building permits of a total value of £5059 10s were issued. Water Supply, llcatberlea East Road.—l have considered this matter, brought up 1. 1 the last meeting, and have to report that a 1 $-in. diameter piper to Mr Richard’s bounary, and then a 1 in. diameter pipe, would give ample supply for present needs, but if at any future date a further supply on this road is necessary then it would be good practice to extend the ljin. pipe for the full 42 chains. This latter pipe would ensure a full supply for all persons concerned.—The report was received.
