NEW MINERAL.
NAMED AFTER GEOLOGIST. AUCKLAND, Jan. 21. To find an entirely new mineral and have it named after him was the pleasant experience. that befell Mr C. D. Woodbouse, well-known mining engineer and geologist of California, who arrived from San Francisco this morning. Mr Woodbouse,' who divides his time between Santa Barbara, Long Island and Palm Beach while m the United States, was accompanied by his wife and young daughter. The new mineral, which looked something like a piece of white coral with quartz-like formations, had a most imposing chemical formula, and was discovered in the White Mountains by Mr Woodbouse, who is an enthusiastic geologist, and has followed his hobby for many years in between working at his profession in Europe, France and Africa. The new mineral has been named Woodhouseite, and belongs to the Beudantite group. Mr Woodbouse, who is paying his first- visit to New Zealand, intends to fish for trout at Taupo. “I have heard so much of the wonderful fishing in this country that I could not resist it,” he said. “In addition, I am deeply interested in your geologic formations, and it is my intention while here to study the greenstone formations, which aVe a special feature of the Dominion.” ,
