WATER SUPPLY
ANALYSIS ON MONDAY. INVESTIGATIONS PROCEEDING. Arrangements have been made .to cover in a section of the, exposed lug pressure mam on the lull beyond ritzlierbert bridge in an attempt to ameliorate the effect ot the peeuliar taste and smell at present beni D c ° plained of in connection with tne city’s water supply. It was reiterated C o-dav by the city engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) that the water entering the hirers at Tiritea was pure and sweet, with no sign ot smell, probably due to the fact that the pipeline from the dam to tins point was laid deep through a bush-clad area, and away from the sun. it is expected that the result of an analysis of the water by the Health Department will be available on Monday. Samples taken from various part* of the city, including lutzherbert Avenue, where the complaints have been most numerous, will be forwaiaed in ice-boxes for examination. Meanwhile, stated the engineer to-day, the investigations are continuing, but lie expressed the opinion that the smell arose from the decomposition or minute and innocuous organisms always present in water, but whose presence liad been made manifest by the effect of the eun on exposed part* of the pipe-line from Tiritea. There was an impression in some quarters, added the engineer, that the water was drawn from the bottom of the Tiritea reservoir. Actually, it was drawn from a level five feet below the surface through fine gauze strainers, after which it passedby pipe-line to -the filters. No deposit of silt in the reservoir-could possibly get into the draw-off pipe. There was still an inch of overflow at the reservoir earlier in the week.
