ANNIVERSARY DAY.

HOLIDAY TO-MORROW. It was on January 22, 1840, that the Aurora the first of the small pioneer fleet which left England in 1839, sailed into Port Nicholson carrying the initial band of 1500 immigrants, to found the Wellington province. Ninety-eight years will have elapsed to-morrow since the opening of this chapter in the history of New Zealana colonisation. To-morrow will be celebrated as Anniversary Day, and a general holiday observed. The principal local attraction will be the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club’s meeting at Ashhurst. The Manawatu Scottish Society’s picnic will be held at the Awapuni racecourse, and the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s district tournament will open. There are two special cricket matches, and several bowling cluba are holding one-day tournaments.
