PAHIATUA.
PAHIATUA, Jan. 20. Mr and Mrs W. A. Carthew have as their guests Mr and Mrs D. R, Salter, of Raetihi. Miss M. E. Grant, of Karori West, Wellington, has been appointed assistant at the Alfredton School, and Miss A. Lowis, of Seatoun. assistant at Epuni. Miss M. Booth, of Waitawa, is spending a holiday with Mrs F. Hansen, of Matamau. All the cricket matches under the control of the Bush Association, which were to have been played on Saturday, have been postponed until the end of the last round. A donation of £1 Is lias been made to the funds of the association by the patron (Mr J. E. Hewitt). The following new members were elected at a meeting of the management committee of the Pahiatua Lawn Tennis Club: Mrs J. Gregory, Misses M. J. Taylor, M. Smith, T. N. Prussing and Messrs G. K. Claris, E. Broughton and S. Walsh. A traffic tally is to lie taken by the Highways Board at Allen’s Bridge, on the Makuri Road, from January 26, 1938, to February 2.
The golden jubilee of the Pahiatua County will be celebrated towards the end of this year. Yesterday the clerk of the council (Mr J. Hutton) intimated that the Gazette notification of the county was made on October 18. 1888, and that, the first meeting was held on November 28, 1888. The council agreed that some suitable function be held to mark the occasion and the chairman, Cr. Hodgins and the clerk were appointed a committee to make the preliminary arrangements. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr A. Barrell, a former councillor and an old resident.
