HEAVY WEATHER
OFF AUSTRALIAN COAST. SHIPS SHELTERING. i AIR SERVICES SUSPENDED. . (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 20, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 18. Heavy weather is prevailing on the North Coast of New South AVales and many ships are sheltering. Similar conditions off the Queensland coast resulted in a mishap to the Burns, Philp Company’s ship Montoro on route to- New Guinea. The crew effected repairs and the vessel is due at Townsville to-morrow. Aerial services between Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney were cancelled for the whole of to-day.
TORRENTIAL RAINS. PREMISES INUNDATED. Received January 20, 11.10 a.mf SYDNEY; Jan. 20. The cyclone on the North Coast has been followed by torrential rains, which threaten to cause extensive flooding in the Southern Queensland and Northern Rivers districts of New South Wales.
The Tweed River broke its banks last night and spread over miles of canefields and also invaded the main streets of Murwillumbali. There is a foot of water in many business premises. ' A wasliaway occurred on the railway near Kyogle and the express trains between Sydney and Brisbane were delayed.
