TOLL OF LIFE.

GALE IN BRITAIN. THIRTY PERSONS LOST. (British Official Wireless.) Received January 19, 10.25 a.m. RUGBY, Jan. 18. Tho toll of life on land and sea during the week-end gale exceeded 30. Defences against the sea were washed away during the night at Abersytwyth and further serious damage was done to houses on tho promenade.

Some exceptionally high spring tides caused hooding in many of the coastal towns and river estuaries.

Watchers were on duty along the Thames during the night. The spring tide was the highest since 1928 owing to the piling up of the water in the estuary by the gale. The river, however, remained confined within its banks.
