OVER EIGHTY-ONE DEGREES.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE. HOT WEATHER CONTINUES. Since the beginning of this year the average maximum temperature recorded in Palmerston North each day has been 81.44 degrees, which is the highest over a . similar period for many years. On no fewer than 12 of the 18 days the thermometer has registered over 80 degrees, while on seven days 85 degrees were exceeded. The past week. commencing on January 12. has been oppressively hot, the readings for six consecutive days, in which period the record of 91 degrees was reached, averaging 86 degrees. The details are as follow:—January 1, 76 degrees; January 2, 85; January 3, 84; January 4 ; *B7; January 5, 80; January 6, 76; January 7, 82; January 8, 88; January 9, 71 January 10. • 70; January IT. 73; January 12, 86; January 13, 83; January 14, 85; January 15, 87; January 16, 91; January 17, 83; January 18, 79. During the period under reviewrain has fallen on only four days, the total fall being 1.89 inches, which is ,of course, well below the average. WAIPUKURAU SWELTERS. WAIPUKURAU. Jan. 18. Following more reasonable temperatures on Monday, the heat-wave returned to Waipukurau to-day, when the second hottest day for the year was experienced, the temperature for a long period registering 94.2 deg. heat was stifling and conditions almost unbearable. In the early evening a cool wind brought some welcome relief. HEAT IN KING COUNTRY. The oldest King Country settlers cannot remember such hot weather as has been experienced in Taumarunui and district during the past week. The thermometer reading in the shade on Sunday was 92 degrees, Saturday’s reading was 91 degrees, and 93 degrees were registered on Friday. Shearing and haymaking have been completed without any interruption.
