Mr D. A. Malcolm, teacher at Kakariki, has been appointed to the Otaki School as assistant. Private cable advice has been received in Wellington of the death in Sydney of Mr W. J. Bloomfield, who was an outstanding figure in the insurance world.-—Press Association. Mr H. J. Jones, assistant master at the Levin School, is to retire on January 31 after 22f years’ teaching service. Before his appointment to Levin in 1917 Mr Jones taught at Koputaroa.

Mr R. L. C. Aitchison, who has been a member of the Palmerston North City Council for the past seven years, has intmiated that he will not be seeking re-election at the municipal elections to be held in May next. Hon. W. E. Parry (Mimstei of Internal Affairs), accompanied by Mi's Parry, arrived at Auckland by train from Wellington yesterday and left in the afternoon for Sydney. Mr Parry will represent the New Zealand Government at the 150th anniversary celebrations in Australia.

Mr W. H. Swanger, formerly secretary of the Wanganui Education Board, has consented to allow his name to go forward as one for selection as the National Party candidate for tlie Wanganui electorate at the General Election. Mr Swanger has lived all his life in Wanganui.

Colonel R. J. Blackham is a passenger to New Zealand by the Akaroa, which left London on December 28. After a fortnight's holiday in the Dominion lie will leave for Australia. Colonel Blackham was on the staff of the Viceroy of India from 1912 to 1914, and is an assistant-commis-sioner of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

The death occurred this week of Mr, George Carter, a well-known Auckland builder. In recent years Mr Carter had lived at Leamington, Cambridge. Three weeks ago he went to Auckland. Mr Carter was born in England and came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Bebbington. arriving at Wellington in August, 1879. He followed his trade as a builder at Petone. Later, he moved to Palmerston North, where lie took a keen interest in school and civic affairs; He went to Auckland in 1896. ,
