UNUSUAL CASE.
SEQUEL TO RAID. Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, Jan. 17. w After hearing evidence to-day. Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., convicted Percy William Everett, who was charged that, on October 10, 1937, in order to enable Charles Thomas Arthur Clark to avoid detection, lie gave Clark, a person in a common gaminghouse, warn-, ing of the approach of a constable.At the last sitting of the Court, last year the Magistrate gave his decision regarding a certain point raised by Everett’s counsel (Mr R. K. Trimmer). At the first hearing Mr Trimmer had set up that the police had not estalvlulled a prima facie case, but the Magistrate considered that, on the evidence as a whole, a prima facie case had been established. The case was then adjourned to enable Everett to give evidence. .- Defendant was examined at length, to-day. , , . The Magistrate said he was certain that Everett did not know he was committing an offence when he rang Clark, hut said he must convict. He fined Everett £5 Is, with costs 10s. Security for appeal was fixed at £lO 10s.
