TE ARAKURA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) T'E AHAKUIU, Jan. 13. Tho January meeting of the Tc Arakura Women’s Inslliute was held this week. Mrs Griffith (vice-president) presided, and read (he motto, “Let’s leave tho world a- little better by the work we do.” Apologies wore received from Mosdames Haythorne, Danielson, J. J. Hume, F. Chcetham and Swainson. .Mrs Griffith gave an interesting report of the committee meeting of the Awatea Group. The golden thread talk was given on the native thrush by Mrs Whisker. Mrs Stone was asked to contribute the golden thread talk at the next meeting. Later members were treated to a very interesting lecture by Mrs C. G. Dernier on her travels to England. Afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Alesdamcs W. E. Thomas, Sanno and Brown and Mies Thomas. The winners of the competition for the best rock cakes were: Mrs Lower 1, Mrs Fitzgerald 2. Airs Young 3; flower competition, hydrangea, Aim Ansin; earnation, Airs J. J. Hume; gladioli. Mrs Lower. At the close of the meeting Airs Griffith extended special thanks to . A'lrs Dormer for her lecture and to the judges of the competition and tho hostesses. The competitions for the February meeting will be for tho best article made from one yard of cretonne and four pieces of shortbread from a given recipe; the same competitions will ho held, at the gioup meeting. Flower competitions, pom-pom, decorative and cactus dahlia?. Ihe hc«stosses will he Alesdamcs Russell, Ansin, Wallace, Swainson, and Kendrick. A number of friends gathered at Ihe local hall to lender a welcome to Air and Mm L. E. Hansen, who have returned from their honeymoon, and ’ have since taken up residence on Mi'son’s Lme. Airs Hansen wore a pink floral frock. Ihe evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with the following items; Vocal solos, Air I. Lawton; vocal duct, Air and Airs L. Smith; noveltv pianoforte numbers. Air Smith. The music for the dances was supplied by Air Smith, and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Air A. Alikkel--6011. . Airs E. H. Havthornc is spending a holiday at Rotorua. Aliss J. Burnham and Aliss S. Burnham are visiting relatives in Hastings. Airs Ansin and family have, returned' home after spending a holiday at Waitarere Beach. Airs D. Johnston is staying at Rotorua with her relatives. Air and Mrs R. Burnham and family have returned lo Hawke's Bay after spending a holiday at Te Arakura with Air and Mrs R. Burnham. Air and Airs Salter and family, of Ractilii, arc the guests of Air and Airs G. H. Bennett. Aire Gaughan, of Auckland is a visitor lo the district as the guest of All and Airs. Hansen. Miss Al. Burnham has returned to the district.
