RONGOTEA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, Jan. 13. An active and enthusiastic company of Methodist Church officials representing the Sanson-Rongotea circuit met on Wednesday evening; there were sixteen present, while apologies for absence were received from Messrs 11. Masters, A. Matthews, J. Sanson, T. Tromain and L. Collis. Verbal reports on behalf of the three congregations at Sanson, Taikoroa, and Rongotea were unanimous that the past year had been one of unusual achievement. Rev. U. E. Fordyce gave lavishly of his time, and received ready support from the congregations in his charge. The garden party held at the home of Mr W. I. Hunt, in December, realised £32 5s 2d. The annual' circuit collections on behalf of the orphanages amounted to £4 17s 9d. A remit had gone forward lo the Synod from a previous quarterly meeting, with regard to drinking in cars at dances, and. suggesting an extension of the powers of the police, in an effort to control the practice. Synod had approved, and copies of the remit were sent to tho Prime Minister, Hon. R. Semple, and Hon. 11. G. R. Mason;, the replies received all promised the most favourable consideration. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Hutchinson (Taikoroa), who is an inmate of the Hospital in Palmerston North, and with Miss A. Huddleston, who is undergoing treatment at Rotorua, Two young men were received into membership. The balance-sheet showed a credit for the quarter of £4 9s lid. Mr Grinstcad, of Palmerston North, was granted permission to hold a temperance service at Rongotea in February. , Harvest festival services will be held in March. A remit from the Sanson leaders’ meeting was discussed, “That, instead of the usual sale of produce following the harvest thanskgiving, members be invited to make a voluntary contribution equal in value to the proceeds of such sale.” This was approved. Rev. G. 11. Bell, in charge of the colporteur van, will visit tho circuit at the cud of January. The decision to hold bi-monthly prayer meeting at the. Sanson Church met with hearty approval. Mrs M. E. Smith and Mrs T. Walsh wore appointed delegates to attend the conference to he held in Wellington next month. Mrs Smith and Mr 11. Black presented brief reports on the Synod, in view of the shortage of preachers, seivices will bo bold on alternate Sunday evenings only at Sanson, the situation to be reviewed in six months' time. Alc.-srs 11. Black and C. R. Hunt were appointed trustees of a now car fund. Following the Benediction a social half-hour was enjoyed. Misses E. and G. Thompson are the guests of Mrs A. J. Will. Mrs J. Aird, senr., of Rongotea, has left to make her homo in Palmerston North. Tho friends of Mr J. Martin will regret to learn he is an inmate of Palmerston North Mospi tab Mr W. J. Yarrall. of Riverton, Southland, is spending a few days in Rongotea. Owing lo the intense heat in recent weeks the butter-makers in the local factory aro experiencing an unusual difficulty in working and pounding tho butter. The supply of cream was well maintained up to the eiid of the year, but there has been a serious drop since, and each day records a smaller output. The plenlifulness of the insects known as ladybirds lias been a marked feature of tho summer. While white butterflies are also very noticeable they do not appear to be doing so much damage to. crops, and there are few caterpillars in evidence.
