MIXED FORTUNE.

LARGE HAWERA TEAM. QUARTERED AT MELBOURNE. Mixed fortune has attended the Ilawera trainor, J. Fryer, since his arrival in Melbourne recently with the large string of nine horsed, who were joined by Soloist and Namakia, making his team 11 in all, the latter pair having bcon in the Commonwealth since November. Red Manfred lias gone amiss, and will be unable to race for seine time. Ho was quito sound when ho left Ilawera, but. apparently the bard tracks in Victoria proved his downfall. Two other members, Flying Chief and Black Friar, fell-away slightly on arrival, but Fryer hopes to have them back to their best, soon. The Melbourne Cup candidate Wotali is doing everything asked of him in resolute style, and, although it is a big thing to expect, him to repeat last year's performance, llis connections aro hopeful that ho will run well again, and at the present rate of progress Wotan will be in excellent order for tho big event ill November. Tout lc Monde has done better than any of the string since being stationed at Melbourne, and although nothing definite was said as to when lie would contest, his first hurdlo engagement, it is expected that lie will bo seen out at an early date. International, Elannge, Panloon, and the two-year-old China Clipper have also made satisfactory progress since their arrival and the quartette aro in excellent order to commence their spring campaign. Tho hurdler Soloist has been spelling for the past couple of months, but, rejoined tho activo brigade shortly after Fryer’s arrival. Namakia lias proved rather disappointing in Victoria to date, but her unproved showing into second place recently suggests that she may soon get on the winning list. Tho last-mentioned pair wove taken to Australia by the former Ilawera hurdle horseman, R. Webby, but Owing to increasing weight lie has given up riding.
