A DEPLETED TEAM.

WOODVILLE OWNER-TRAINER. (By “Spectator.”) When the Woodvillo owner-trainer, H. E. Russell, left for Sydney last April he took five horses with him. Subsequently Brown Oak was sent homo, and, having sold Golden Treasure and Mala, he is left with only a couple of two-year-olds. They aro Golden Flame, a full-sister to that brilliant galloper Golden Wings, and Sports Coat, by Pink Coat from Jkrretiere. The latter cost 200gns at the yearling sales hold at Trorttham last January. Golden Flame is considered by her owner to bo a bit above the average and a good future is predicted for her. Lickem Well. Lickem, who has been galloping well at Ilawera, bears a very bright appearance, and is well forward for the early spring, lie will probably -be seen again at Wanganui. and if allowed to keep Ills engagement in the Wanganui Guineas he should make his presence felt, llis two-year-old racing last season was not of a very serious nature, and at his last appearance a. A wap it ni in May Lickem outclassed a, good field of juveniles over fivo furlongs. In tho majority of his races Lickoin always finished very fast, and ho left tho impression that he would be at his best *ovcr a distance of ground. Burglar’s Career Over. It is reported of Burglar, who broke down in the Grand National Steeplechase when moving up six furlongs from home, that a tendon has gone so badly that is is now stated that he will never race again, though an attempt will be made to save him for use as a hack. May Come North. The Wash dyke gelding Lycidas, trained by P. Hogan, who raced at Riccarton this week, is booked for a trip to the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s annual 4 st-ceplecnase meeting at Kllcnslic, and provided he comes through the meeting favourably lie will come north next week. His mission is tiic Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Encouraging Form. Alyth, who figures in two events at the Pakuranga meeting, displayed encouraging form the last time she at Ellcrfilio by acting as runner-up to Erndalo in a seven furlong event. As Alyth has wintered wel land has not been over-raced klic may not bo long in earning- a winning bracket. She handles heavy going in a satisfactory manner, and if those conditions prevail next week it will not affect her prospects.

Progress Of Jumpers. Little Ims been seen of King Rod at Ellerslie recently, as the gelding is doing his work around the roads and hills. the Lackham gelding was troubled with a bowed tendon a short time ago, consequently lie may bo n bit 6hort of work for gagement in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Royal Chips, in the same stable, is doing his work well and has been showing promise in her latost schooling efforts at headquarters. Starter Appointed. Mr M. Crimmins has been appointed starter to the Waverley Racing Club, who hold their meeting on Labour Day. Mr Crimmins only commenced starting at the Taumarunui meeting last October, and he made such a success of it that he has since been appointed starter to the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, Wairarapa Racing Club, Matamata Racing Club, Waipa Racing Club, and Opolilu Jockey Club.

Trial As ’Chaser. The Takanini-traincd gelding Sub-Editor was given a trial over t lie steeplechase fences at Ellcrslie recently, and acquitted himself in a satisfactory manner. He was not bustled at any stage of the journey, and no fault could bo found with his jumping, considering it was his first attempt over the big fences at headquarters. SubEditor is tho right stamp to make good as a ’chaser, and with tho necessary experience should pay his way in tho new department, lie is on the minimum in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup.
