DASH TO GRETNA GREEN.
AMERICAN FATHER’S HASTE,
A wealthy American, who is staying at Claridge’s Hotel, London, told the Daily Mail the story of his dash by air from London to prevent his aged 17, from marrying over 'the blacksmith’s anvil at Gretna Green.
He is Mr George Carr, vice-presi-dent of the Deborn Chemical Co. of Chicago, and he arrived in the Queen Mary with his daughter, Marthe, whose mother died 10 years ago.
The daughter had said that she was going shopping. Mr Carr, after many hours of anxiety, was called to a telephone. “It’s me, Pop. lam with a friend and am staying the night at a village near Carlisle,” said the daughter. Mr Carr, learning that Gmtna Green was near Carlisle, chartered an aeroplane and left Croydon at 4 a.m., and persuaded her to return..-and not marry a man much older than herself, whom she had met at Canires. Father and daughter landed at Croydon at 2 p.m.
