HELPING EX-SOLDIERS

EXPENDITURE OF FUNDS. GOVERNMENT INQUIRIES. “During the year your executive received various communications indicating that the Minister of Internal Affairs was undertaking a comprehensive enquiry regarding the various war funds in the Dominion and their administration,” states Mr A. E. Mansford in his annual report as president of the Manawatu Patriotic Society. “It would appear that the substantial object of the investigation _ is to consider the necessity or advisability of amalgamating all these various funds and of their being subject to a central administration constituted in Wellington. One of tho main features of the enquiry seems to be tho varying rules which regulate the present local administrations of the various organisations in whom the funds are at present vested, and also the aggregate and respective costs of the local administrators. < “Your executive devoted a considerable amount of time to this matter and also in providing the Minister with. the large range of information he required for purposes preliminary to the actual calling together' of the appointed committee of investigation. It was unanimously decided to oppose any schemes for compulsory amalgamation of funds under a central organisation by reason of the complete and comprehensive policy of this society, the result of many months of most careful investigation and long consideration, and also. h c " cause of the modest cost of administration in our case (now since that time actually reduced further). It was further decided that the society send two members of the executive to appear before the committee when it sits in order to present the views of this society. Inn question is certain to be discussed at the annual general meeting and I accordingly refrain from making further comment at this stage.”
