FOXTON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Aug._ 10. The monthly mooting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. The water and drainage foreman (Mr AV. D. Neville) reported that during the month 900 macrccarpa i rocs had been planted and 2,550,000 gallons of water pumped. The gas manager (Air A. G. Thomson) reported that during July there were made at the works 246,000 cubic feet of gas and 26i tons of coal were carbonised. The Public AVorks Department, acknowledging the council’s request for further improvements to the corner of Union' and Johnston Streets, intimated that as considerable work had already been done the suggestion of moving a shed would have to be by private arrangement; between the council and tLc company. The sotting back of sandhill would be undertaken when the FoxtonShannon highway was attended to. The department noted that -the council had a sign erected cn tho corner directing traffic into Alain Street and pointed out that tho main highway was via Johnston Street and it therefore required the sign to be modified or removed. It was decided to ask the Alanawatu Automobile Association to erect a sign “A’ou now enter Foxton”. at both north and south entrances to the town in lieu of the existing sign. Support was lent to the committee organising a fund for tho erection of a memorial to the lafe Dr E. M. AVyllie. A cheque for £69 17s 7d was received from the Kairanga County Council as tho council’s 6haro of the heavy traffic fees for the quarter. Roads anti streets and the borough sewerage scheme were involved in a lengthy debate, during the course of which it was revealed that certain sections of the borough sewerage system were in a serious plight. At a previous meeting it was decided to raise a loan and seal certain roads with a view to cutting down maintenance costs. The clerk submitted a statement' which showed that 792 yards of metal, 756 yards of chips, and 24.132 gallons of bitumen would be required to complete the programme which would cost £2324 16s. AA'ork had been commenced under the Government employment scheme with twenty men. The Alnyor pointed out that the council bad not yet arranged its finance and it would have to act with caution. It was finally decided to apply for a loan of £3OOO for road work and the waterworks foreman was instructed to submit a report cn the state of the sewers at next meeting.
