FLEET AIR ARM
SPEARHEAD OF ATTACK. BRITAIN’S INTENT lON. PROTECTION OF SHIPPING. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 11, 11.15 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 10. Air Hector Bywater, writing in the Daily Telegraph, says: “Britain intends to make the Fleet Air Arm the spearhead of the Navy’s power. It will be ahead of all foreign countries in quality and second only to the United States in quantity. “After the new carriers and catapult ships are completed Britain will have 520 ’planes carrier-borne and 165 aboard catapult ships compared with a total of 200 at present. Further increases will be made later. “The lower deck ratings will be trained as pilots. Methods of take-off nnd alighting on the sea are being developed to enable tiie ’planes to operate in any weather except storms. A system of long-range patrols to warn against air raids and to protect shipping in narrow, seas is also being introduced.”
