(From Our Own Correspondent.) COLYTON, Aug. 9. There was a good attendance at the August meeting of the Women’s Institute, and over forty members and visitors were welcomed. Mrs Bcatson was in the chair. A letter was received from the secretary (Mrs Weston) resigning lior position; in the meantime, until a successor was appointed, Mrs J. Shortall kindly acted in her place. _ Later in the afternoon Miss Mabel Smith offered to take the position for tho remainder of the year. An invitation was received from the Makino Institute to attend their birthday party. It was decided, on the motion of Mrs J. Shortall, seconded by Mrs Pack, to postpone tho birthday celebrations until the second Tuesday in September. Mrs Bcatson again offered to make the birthday cake and Mrs N. W. Pcarco to ice it. Further arrangements were left in the hands of the committee. The competition for the best collection of spring flowers brought forth a largo number of beautiful entries. Miss Curtis and Mrs Walker acted as judges, and tho result was; —Mrs Jones 1, Mrs M. A. McLeod 2, Mrs N. Pearce 3. Tho second competition, for “tho best flowor in my garden,” was judged by popular vote, Miss Smith coming first, Mrs F. AUcrby second, aiid Mrs Knight third. The third competition, guessing names of songs, was won by Miss Dell Adsett. Miss Curtis entertained members with an Interesting talk on her travels in Canada, England, Scotland and Sweden, for which she was thanked by Mrs Bcatson. Mrs Bussell was tho convener for the afternoon and chose for the motto, “A little forethought will save much afterthought.” Tho stall for federation funds was well patronised and was in the capable hands of Miss Pearce. The hostesses were Mrs N. Pearce, Mrs Whiteman, Mrs Crook and Miss Wales.
On Saturday evening tho Badminton. Club played a friendly match against a team from Palmerston North. Some very interesting gomes took place and the result was a win for the visitors by 14 games to 10. Mr and Alls 11. S. Gardner, of Ashburton, after a visit to Suva and an extended tour of the North Island, have been tho guests of Air and Mrs R. AV. Brown, “Glengarnock,” before returning homo. Mr and Airs L. Portch, “Hazclmcre,” who have purchased a farm at Makino, left at the beginning of tho week for their new home, Mr Whitehead, of Karori, Wellington, is spending a holiday with Mr and Airs T. A. Smith, “Fairfield.” Miss N. Shortall, of Auckland, is on a visit to her parents, Mr and Airs J. Shortall, “West End.” Other visitors with Mr and Mrs Shortall include Sister Smith, of Hamilton; Aliss Alinehin, of Palmerston North, and Miss M. Shortall and Mr P, Shortall, of Wellington.
